CAWP and University of Michigan Press Launch Book Series
The CAWP Series in Gender and American Politics publishes innovative work on gender and politics. We invite manuscripts that push the boundaries of current thinking about the intersection of gender and politics; that demonstrate the centrality of gender to our understanding of American democracy; that are attentive to linkages among theory, empirical analysis, and political practice; and that study under-represented groups and under-researched topics within the field of women and politics. We encourage work that recognizes how other categories of analysis, including race, ethnicity, class, and sexuality, help to constitute and inform gender politics. The series is open to a variety of methodological approaches, and favors projects that employ multiple or innovative methods.

The CAWP Series in Gender and American Politics is published by the University of Michigan Press in association with the Center for American Women and Politics (CAWP) at Rutgers University. Series editors are Susan J. Carroll (Rutgers University) and Kira Sanbonmatsu (Rutgers University).

"Have Women State Legislators In the United States Become More Conservative?:
A Comparison of State Legislators in 2001 and 1988"

Susan J. Carroll, Professor of Political Science and CAWP senior scholar, wrote this article published in Atlantis 27:2(2003): 128-139. Findings in this article include: Women state legislators in the United States in 2001 are more liberal in their political ideology and policy attitudes than their male colleagues, just as they were in 1988. Nevertheless, a notable change is evident in the ideological predispositions of Republican Party women, especially in the lower houses of the legislatures. Republican women representatives in 2001 are more conservative and more like their male counterparts than they were in the late 1980s.

Gender and Elections: Shaping the Future of American Politics
Gender and Elections offers a systematic, multi-faceted account of the role of gender in the electoral process through the 2004 elections, highlighting the most important developments for women as voters and candidates in the 2004 elections and providing a more long-term, in-depth analysis of the ways that gender has helped shape the contours and outcomes of electoral politics in the United States. Edited by Susan J. Carroll, CAWP senior scholar and Professor of Political Science, Rutgers, and Richard L. Fox, Union College, New York. Published by Cambridge University Press, December 2005.
