This program will focus on students and their families in grades 5-8 and expand upon the successful Family Math program currently conducted in over 1000 elementary schools in New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania.

This three-day workshop will prepare middle school educators to pilot the program in their own schools and then, if the program is effectively evaluated, teachers are eligible to receive advanced training in presenting the program to other teachers.

Middle School Family Math is a program that creates opportunities for:

  • parents
  • middle school teachers
  • students

to work together on mathematical problem-solving, communication, and future goals. The emphasis is on collaboration, confidence-building, and cultural awareness. The activities are based on curriculum standards for grades 5-8 created by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). They also include more advanced work on patterns and functions, statistics, probability, geometry, and measurement of angles, perimeter, and area.

Participants will become familiar with Middle School Family Math activities, learn strategies for recruiting adolescent students and their families, increase their understanding of equity issues in the adolescent years, and begin to plan a support system for helping parents and children from their hardest-to-reach target population.

The cost for this three-day program is $1,199 for a team of two teachers. This cost includes all materials and breakfast and lunch.
