There is an exceptionally wide array of marine, freshwater, and terrestrial ecosystems in New Jersey. Within a single day one can visit and study habitats of the barrier island, coastal plain, the piedmont, Precambrian highands, and ridge and valley geological provinces.

University-supported research centers and field stations include the Rutgers Shellfish Research Laboratories at Bivalve, Tuckerton Marine Field Station on Little Egg Inlet at the mouth of the Mullica River-Great Bay estuary, Pinelands Field Station in Lebanon State Forest, and
Hutcheson Memorial Forest Center , consisting of 250 acres of primeval deciduous forest and old fields of known ages near New Brunswick. In addition, there are two woodlots (370 acres and 650 acres) on campus. Close association and cooperative research are encouraged with federal, state, and private institutions in New Jersey and New York.
