Program HighlightsThe Griffis Essay Prize was established both as a memorial to Reverend William Elliot Griffis, 1843-1928, a Rutgers graduate who was among the first "foreign employees" in Japan, and as an incentive to promote a high level of scholarship. The prize is oftered annually for the best undergraduate essay focusing on some aspect of Asian culture or society. In cooperation with the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures, the Asian Studies Program has established several highly successful lecture series on East Asian civilizations. The lectures, presented by prominent scholars in their fields, have appeared as Rutgers' Occasional Publications in East Asian Studies. In addition, the program sponsors a regular faculty seminar on East Asian humanities. The East Asian House, located on the Douglass campus, has been established as a residence for students interested in combining the study of the Chinese or Japanese language with an exposure to East Asian cultures.
