I work in the areas of wetland ecology and ecosystems ecology, focussing on plant-soil interactions, but also working on a wide range of related aspects of plant and soil ecology. My current research includes several studies of the interactions of exotic invasive plants and forest soils and studies of nitrogen cycling in forested wetlands affected by urbanization.

I also direct the New Jersey Water Resources Research Institute, a federally-funded program of water-related research and outreach.

I teach courses on wetland ecology, ecosystems ecology and global change, invasion ecology, and co-teach our general ecology course and field methods course.
