Internship in the Rutgers University Federal Relations Office

Rutgers offers a nine-week, undergraduate internship each summer. The session for the summer internship is June 2, 2008 through August 1, 2008. A 40-hour per week commitment is expected. A $3,000 stipend will be offered to the selected student to help cover living expenses in Washington, D.C. The student will be responsible for arranging his or her own travel and lodging in Washington.

Undergraduate students with a particular interest in political science, public policy, science policy, or communications are encouraged to apply. Applications for the summer program are due March 14, 2008. Selection of our summer intern will be made by early-April 2008. While there is certainly flexibility to tailor the responsibilities to the student's interests, the general government relations functions to be performed include:

• Attend congressional hearings and submit summaries to the Association of American Universities (AAU).
• Aid in planning RU Congressional Seminars and demonstration projects on Capitol Hill.
• Accompany staff to meetings on Capitol Hill and with the higher education community.
• Attend monthly meetings with the Washington representatives of New Jersey corporations (The New Jersey Group) and assist with the preparations of these meetings.
• Share in the general work of the office, including administration, tracking legislation, and responding to congressional requests for information.
