These photos are from a trip to Kenya in May 2006 (my wife was born and
raised in Nairobi, and most of her family still resides there).

Here is an old picture of my wife's grandfather with Jomo Kenyatta.
My father-in-law had a celebration for us at his inn, the Masai Den
Hotel.

This is the Masai Den Hotel, which is just outside of Nairobi.

Here I am, explaining Frankfurt counterexamples to libertarian accounts
of free-will to two of my wife's uncles.

Philosophers are skilled at toasts.
My father-in-law is the chairman of the Constituency Development Fund
for Langata, an area of Nairobi that includes Kibera, Africa's largest
slum. We spent two days in Kibera. Perhaps the highlight of our trip
was going to a Harambee in
Kibera for women's groups, at which 3.7 million Kenyan shillings were
raised. In addition to a large local crowd, there were many politicians
present. Raila Odinga, main opposition leader, leading 2007
presidential candidate, MP for Langata Constituency, and former
Roads Minister, presided over the event. [UPDATE: Raila Odinga is now
Prime Minister of Kenya, in a power-sharing agreement
negotiated after the stolen 2007 Kenyan elections]

Politics in Kenya seems to involve as much dancing as it does here in
the States. Odinga is (fittingly) in orange, and 2007 Presidential
candidate and KANU member William Ruto is
second from the left, also with a wreath of flowers. I was particularly
impressed with Ruto's speech; he is clearly a politician to watch out
for.

Raila tries his moves out with some Masai dancers.

My father-in-law speaks to the crowd with Raila looking on.

Some well-known foreign dignitaries address the crowd.
