Course
specific study groups is a unique service offered in conjunction with the
professors of a selected number of courses. Study group
sessions are facilitated by a Rutgers student selected by the
professor and trained and supervised by Rutgers Learning Center staff in
cooperation with the faculty.
Study Group leaders design each session to assist students in mastering the
course material and, at the same time, increase competence in
learning how to learn the concepts of the discipline. Group leaders not only
review the course material with the students, but integrate study strategies
such as note taking, problem solving, and test preparation, allowing the
students to link course content and cognitive skills development in an
interactive small group environment. (Please note: Study group leaders are
NOT instructors for the course and are NOT there to teach, but to facilitate
a study session.)
Recorded data shows that students who participate in the study groups earn
significantly higher average final course grades. By taking part in study
group sessions, students become more actively involved in their course, are
guaranteed more study time, have a better understanding of course material,
acquire efficient learning strategies and on average, earn higher grades in
the course than students in the same course who do not attend the study
group sessions. |
