The Mathematical Theory of Sculpture, 1
Professor Michael Leyton. Rutgers University
Group theory is the mathematical basis of geometry. It is the largest branch of mathematics and controls an extraordinarily large range of phenomena. For example, group theory controls all of quantum mechanics and predicts the classes of elementary particles that make up the universe. A group is a closed system of transformations (e.g., rotations, reflections, translations). In a forthcoming book, I develop a group-theoretic analysis of design. The current sequence of websites shows a set of sculptures I created in order to test the theory. If the reader wants to understand the mathematical theory, he or she can read my web-tutorials on group theory and architecture. ![]()
