Personal Biosketch

Dr. Tugrul Özel is assistant professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering and the Director of Manufacturing Automation and Research Laboratory. at Rutgers University. He received a B.S. degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Istanbul Technical University, Turkey in 1987, a M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Dokuz Eylul University, Turkey in 1991 and a Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Ohio State University in 1998. Dr. Özel previously worked four years at NSF funded Engineering Research Center for Net Shape Manufacturing and taught three years at Cleveland State University. He was a summer faculty fellow at NASA Glenn Research Center in 1999, where he conducted research on micro-manufacturing sciences.

Dr. Özel's teaching and research interests include computational modeling of machining and forming processes, micro-geometry design for advanced tooling, multi-criteria optimization of manufacturing operations, automated manufacturing systems, micro/nano manufacturing, design and manufacturing of alternative energy, health-care and medical devices. He has research articles published in ASME Journal of Manufacturing Science and Engineering, International Journal of Machine Tools and Manufacture, Journal of Materials Processing Technology, International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology,  and Transactions of North American Manufacturing Research Institute. His research has been funded by National Science Foundation, NASA/NJ Space Consortium, Rutgers Research Council and industry. He is an active member of SME, ASME, North American Manufacturing Research Institute (NAMRI) and CIRP member candidate. He is listed in The Marquis Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in America, and Who's Who in Science and Engineering. He received the Best Paper Award in 8th CIRP International Workshop on Modeling of Machining Operations in 2005 and his sole-authored article ranked 4th and his article co-authored with his Ph.D. student Y. Karpat ranked 1st in Top 25 Most Read Articles in International Journal of Machine Tools and Manufacture at different times. Dr. Özel's journal publications have been cited by 132 journal articles in the SCI-EXPANDED database between 1994-2008.
