Use published bibliographies:

Locating dissertations:
Shortcuts B locating a published bibliography or annual serial bibliography
Note: There are two types of bibliographies, one of works by the author, the other of works about the author -- make sure you find the right kind.
Use a bibliography of bibliographies, such as:
Bracken, James K. Reference Works in British and American Literature (REF PR 83 .B74 1998)
Use library catalogs (see list above):
Examine the bibliography looking at the following criteria:
* dates covered
* types of materials included (books, articles, books chapters, dissertations)
* languages included (English only?)
* authoritativeness (does it include all the important works?)
* comprehensiveness (is it complete or selective?)
* annotations or other information included (are annotations descriptive or evaluative?)
