Instructional Sessions:
During the instructional sessions, students work in a group of 4-5 together with a teaching assistant, who is a Rutgers undergraduate or graduate student in mathematics or computer science. During the instructional session, there will be several repetitions of the following cycle: the instructor will present some material, you will discuss the material with your group and do some problems, and the material will be discussed by everyone. At the conclusion of the homework session, the Resident Instructor will announce who will present each of the homework problems the next day. There won't usually be formal homework sessions in the evening, but you will need to prepare your homework presentation, and you will be given additional optional challenging problems that you can work on.
Variety Sessions:
The final program of the afternoon will be the variety session, held on Monday-Thursday from 4:45 to 5:45. It is called the "variety session" because a variety of activities are scheduled during this period.
Open Recreation:
On most evenings after dinner there will be an 1 1/2 hours for an open recreation period, do that those who wish can go swimming, play basketball, raquetball, tennis or volleyball, explore Rutgers computers Labs or campus, work on the YSP newletterm monthbook, Web site, or T-shirt committees, or engage in other social activities, etc. The Open Rec period is under the supervision of the residence life staff, so that each evening there will be three or four choices of activities.
Residential Evening Program:
During the residential evening program, students will be involved in fun activities conducted by the residence life staff. Some of these activities include a participant talent show, rock climbing, roommate games, beach party, and much more. Between 10 and 11PM each evening, there is free time, during which some people might continue with homework, but others may want to relax or watch movies on our VCR. During this time, participants will be expected to remain inside the residence hall.
