Program Description:

The Junior Intern Program is an exciting opportunity for current Rutgers students to be mentored in leadership, program planning, and community building skills. Interested students must submit an application, recommendation, and complete an in-person interview. At the end of the fall semester, ten students will be selected as Junior Interns for the spring semester. During the spring semester, the Junior Interns will work closely with current Senior Interns, gaining knowledge and experience in the programming and marketing of various events for the Asian American Cultural Center. At the end of the academic year, four Junior Interns will be selected to become paid staff Senior Interns (2 Programming, 2 PR) for the following academic year.

Positions:

During the program, Junior Interns will attend staff meetings regularly and contribute in the planning and implementation of events hosted by the AACC. Interns will work on the programming or public relations aspect of an event. Below is a description of each.

• The Programming Intern is responsible for assisting in the development of a comprehensive schedule of programs and events which enable and facilitate cultural awareness. As a part-time student employee of the Asian American Cultural Center, the Programming Intern will work with the staff, programming board, volunteers, and other interested students. Together, they will develop both short and long term programs which promote Asian American culture and increase awareness of Asian American issues to the Rutgers community.

• The Public Relations Intern holds a position that requires strong communication skills. He or she will serve as a student liaison bridging the AACC and other departments and student organizations. The PR intern will also work closely with the AACC staff and Programming Interns to insure that the publicity needs are met for all programs.

Qualifications/requirements of Junior Interns:

Performance and growth will be assessed throughout the program to determine an individual’s potential to become a Senior Intern at the AACC. Ten students will be selected as Junior Interns, while only four will be selected to become Senior Interns (2 Programming, 2 PR). Below are some requirements to becoming a Junior Intern:

• Attend the Junior Intern Retreat on January 18-19, 2007.
• Attend weekly staff meetings and training sessions held Fridays from 12pm-4pm. Times subject to change.
• Willingness to work with an ethnically diverse and culturally pluralistic student body and staff.
• Willingness to work in an environment emphasizing knowledge and values related to cross cultural communication and interactions.
• Working knowledge and interest in Asian Pacific community issues in the U.S., the Pacific, Asia, and worldwide.
• Ability to work in a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural environment.
• Effective interpersonal skills, customer service skills, and public relations skills.
• Awareness of the concerns, pressures, and inequities of women, people of color, and people with diverse sexual orientations.
• Ability to advocate and serve as an ally for the above mentioned groups; willingness to create alliances among students from different backgrounds and experiences.
• Ability to handle multiple projects and responsibilities.
• Ability to communicate clearly with the public, in both written and spoken venues.

Junior Intern Retreat:

The Junior Intern Retreat will be held from January 18-19, 2007 and is mandatory for selected Interns. This is an opportunity to build relationships and learn to work as a team, since everyone will be working together throughout the following semester.
