Required Course Materials

We will also be using CPS RFclickers from eInstruction.

If you already have one, you can reuse it for this course. You must have the "RF" model, which allows you to enter numbers as well as letters.

Both are available at New Jersey Books, 108 Somerset St.

Copies of the text are on reserve at the Kilmer Area Library.

A middle level scientific calculator (in the $10 - $25 range, with the ability to take square roots, and to square numbers and store them in several registers) would be useful. A more expensive one will not necessarily be better since you will have to show your calculations on exams and homework problems.

Register your clicker:

Go to www.einstruction.com.
Click the "Students" button in the "Quick Links" area on the right hand side of the page.
Select "Rutgers University" from the drop-down menu in the right-hand pane, and click on "Choose Site".
Enter your email address.
Turn on your clicker. Your serial number should be displayed for several seconds. Enter it in the appropriate field and click on "Submit".
If you already have a CPS Username and Password, enter them. Otherwise, click on the "Create your account" link and create your account.
Click on "Enroll In a Class" and enroll in the course.
- If you are in Sections 03 - 06, the Course ID is J51387E328.
- If you are in Sections 11 - 14, the Course ID is N51388B814.
Please be sure to enter your 9-digit RUID -- NOT your NetID -- in the "Student ID Number" field.
You will be asked for credit card information in order to pay a $15 fee.
You will receive an email that contains, among other things, your "Pad ID". This will allow you to verify that your responses have been received while the questions are being displayed in class.
- If you are in Sections 03 - 06, the email will say that you have registered in Class QMAF09.
- If you are in Sections 11 - 14, the email will say that you have registered in Class QMBF09.
If you have any problems registering your clicker or enrolling in the course, please contact eInstruction technical support at (888) 333-7532.

If you need to change any of your information (for example, you mis-typed your ID or you lose your clicker and need to register a new one), go to the eInstruction site, click on Students, select Rutgers University, and enter your username and password. You will be able to change your information on the "Account Information" page that appears once you have logged in.

General Course Information

Copies of the class PowerPoint Presentations will be available here before each class meeting. These presentations are intended to help you follow the structure of the lecture; they are not intended to be a substitute for attending class. Here are some tips on Printing PowerPoint Presentations

Chapter Exams will be available on-line. You can access them using your Rutgers NetID and password at ecollege.rutgers.edu. Alternatively, you may access them via rutgersonline.net; using your NetID and your password which is your date of birth in YYYYMMDD format. You should be able to access the site after September 15.

Grades for all course exercises will be posted on the SAS Gradebook.

You are responsible for any announcements I send to the class via email. You may use this link to update the address used for class email.

Ilan Gamburg (gamburg@eden.rutgers.edu will hold Supplementary Instruction sessions on Mondays at 6:40 in ARC 207.

Walk-in tutoring will be available through the Rutgers Learning Centers. Check the schedule to find out where and when.

Exams and Grading

Each exam is given in two parts: a conceptual part, consisting of multiple choice and/or essay questions, and a computational part. You may use your book, notes, and calculator for the computational part, but not for the conceptual part. You may not use any electronic device other than your calculator. You may not use your cell phone calculator. You must bring your Rutgers ID card to the exam.

The first two exams are given during regular class meetings on two nights. The conceptual and computational parts of the final are given during the regularly scheduled final exam, shown on the schedule below.

If you have a schedule conflict with an exam, you may be allowed to take the exam before the scheduled date at the discretion of the instructor. If you miss an exam, you will be allowed to take a make-up exam only if you present a note from your Dean's office verifying that you missed the exam due to an excused absence. This note should also indicate a reasonable time frame in which you will be able to make up the exam. You should give this note to the instructor within 1 week of the scheduled date of the exam.

Attendance and Correspondence Policies:

Attendance: You should attend all meetings of all of your classes. If you arrive late or must leave before class is over, please sit near a door and try to be as inconspicuous as possible. It is distracting to everyone to have people walking in and out of the classroom during class.

Classes are held according to the schedule below as long as the University is open. If the weather appears to be threatening, you can check the Campus Operating Status here.

Classroom Etiquette: Please turn off all cell phones, etc., before class begins.

If you wish to use a laptop computer to take notes, that is fine. If you wish to use a laptop computer to surf the web, play games, IM your friends, etc., I would suggest you go to the nearest Student Center. This advice also applies to having side discussions with your classmates, reading newspapers, doing puzzles, etc.
Questions: I encourage you to ask questions during class. If something is unclear, or if you have a question related to the material being discussed, please ask your question then. Chances are that some of your classmates would also like some additional discussion of the topic.

Because of schedule-related issues, I prefer not to answer questions before or after class.
Email: I try to answer email promptly. Having said that,
- Please use a Subject that gives me some idea what you are writing about. This is especially important if you send mail from an account other than eden. Mail from sexgoddess@aol.com with a subject of "hello" is likely to be considered spam and deleted unread.
- If you ask me a question whose answer is on the course web page or Syllabus, my reply is likely to say that.
- If you ask me a question about your standing in the course, please include your name and which course and section you are enrolled in.
- Please re-read the section on "Questions" above. I realize that there are times when you are reviewing notes after class and/or before an exam when you will discover that you have a question. But it is in everyone's best interest for you to ask your questions in class, rather than after the fact, if you have a question while class is in session.
- As stated on the course web page, you are responsible for any announcements, etc., I send to the class via email. Emails are sent to the address that appears when your name is entered into "Search People" on the "Search Rutgers" page. There is a link on the course web page that allows you to update this address.
