PHIL 201: Introduction to Symbolic Logic
Rutgers University, Summer 2008

Final Words

August 13th, 2008 by amorgan

Your final grades have been calculated and should be available to view online soon (e.g. through the My Rutgers portal). Your exams can be picked up from the Philosophy Department. I curved the second exam up slightly to compensate for the fact that we didn’t spend much time on models & invalidity. Email me if you want a copy of the model answers.

Thanks for being an attentive class. Most of you performed very well — I’m proud of you!

Extra Problems on Models & Invalidity

August 12th, 2008 by amorgan

Here are some extra problems on models & invalidity. You can generate additional problems yourselves by looking at the (valid) arguments in the derivation exercises (end of Ch.8), and swapping one of the premises with the conclusion. Chances are, this will make the argument invalid (though, of course, it might not). You can verify your answers using the method of expansion. If the expansion shows that the premises are true and the conclusion false in your model, that model provides a counterexample.

Update:

  • There is an error in Q3. The conclusion should not be negated.
  • I only provided part answers. A complete answer should contain the model as well as the expansions and calculations (and an explanation if I ask for it).

Today’s class is cancelled — sorry for the short notice!  I was going to survey some more advanced topics in logic; this material won’t be on the exam, but the notes are up for those who are interested. Tomorrow’s class will be a review session for the exam, and will be on rain or shine.

Note on Grading of Exam 1

August 5th, 2008 by amorgan

Please note that question 2 was graded out of 10 (not 14 as indicated on the exam), and question 3 was graded out of 12 (not 16). Thus the exam was graded out of a total of 100 (i.e. your score was a percentage).

July 31st, 2008 by amorgan

From one of your fellow Rutgers students: “I am holding [a] blood drive this coming Monday, August 4th, from 10:30AM - 4PM in the College Avenue Student Center MPR… Everyone who donates will receive a coupon for a free coffee and two donuts at the Dunkin Donuts on Easton Avenue”.

This looks like a worthwhile event. You should consider donating!
