The last set of lecture notes on metalogic (lecture #25) provide a brief overview of some more advanced topics in logic. These notes are just for interest, and will not be covered in the final exam.

Here is my record of which homeworks each of you has handed in. Please look over it and make sure it’s accurate. Each homework is graded out of 2 percentage points: you get two points if your homework is complete, one if incomplete (regardless of whether your answers are correct or not. Remember to check correctness against the answers in the book).

As I discussed on Wednesday, I had scheduled the final exam for the last day of class, i.e. Monday, May 4 (usual time, usual place). However, I was recently informed that there is a university-wide rule prohibiting exams being held in the last 2 weeks of the semester. So it looks like we have two options: EITHER ignore the rule and stick with the original plan, OR reschedule the exam for sometime during the exam period. I posed this question to those of you who turned up on Wednesday, and the clear consensus was to stick with the original plan and have the exam on the last day of class. However, I realize that not all of you were present, and that some of you might prefer to discuss this with me one-on-one. So: if for whatever reason you’d prefer to have the exam sometime during the exam period rather than on the last day of class, please let me know asap. Otherwise, we’ll go ahead with the original plan.
PS Here are the notes about the format of the exam that I discussed on Wednesday.

Hi everyone. I screwed up my instructions for the previous homework — I meant to say that you should do the odd-numbered exercises of SET A in Chapter 6. Sorry! As a result, I’m making the previous homework (as I initially described it, i.e. all odd-numbered exercises in Ch.6 + the additional exercise) count for both homework 6 and homework 7. If you haven’t submitted that homework yet, or didn’t submit all of it, you can do so on Monday.

Hi all. I hope you’re enjoying the break. Several of you didn’t submit a homework 5, and some of those who did didn’t complete the additional homework questions that were linked to (please make sure to read the posts about the homework carefully). This resulted in a subtraction of 1 point (out of 2). If you’d like to submit part or all of homework 5 you can do so on Monday.

- Here are the notes about the structure of the exam that I went through last class.
- Today’s class will mostly be spent on revision for the exam. To get the most out of the class, you should come up with some questions about the material we’ve covered so far, and either email them to me or be prepared to raise them in class.
- Remember that my office hours are tonight, 6-7.30pm, in Scott Hall, room 218 or 219.

P1. All classes held today or tonight are cancelled.
P2. Our class is held tonight.
C. Therefore our class is cancelled.
This argument is intuitively valid, and we will learn to prove that it is valid in the second half of the semester when we look at predicate logic (question: is the argument valid in sentential logic?). More importantly for most of you, though, is that the argument is sound. Tonight’s class is in fact cancelled. For this reason, the homework that was due tonight is now due on Wednesday. The office hour that was scheduled for tonight has also been rescheduled for Wednesday. It will be held at Au Bon Pain from 6.00-7.30 pm. If you want to meet but can’t make that time, feel free to email me & arrange an alternative time.

- The notes I had on how to translate ‘unless’ statements were pretty confusing (I confused myself!), so I’ve revised them. They’re now available in the lecture notes section (lecture #7).
- Please make sure to read the instructions for the homework assignments carefully. Some of you are not answering all of the assigned questions. Although I don’t grade your homework assignments on the basis of whether or not they’re correct, I do grade them on the basis of whether or not they’re complete.
- When you do your homework, make sure to check your answers against the answers in the book. If any of your answers are incorrect and you don’t understand why, please ask me (either in class, by email, or during office hours).
- About office hours… they will be held in Scott Hall, room 219 (I think) on Mondays at 6pm.
