Related research on intrapersonal functions followed and accompanied this research - how
emotion regulates and sustains personality and cognitive style differences for example. A book on the
Hidden Genius of Emotion resulted that used case studies showing how emotion systems work in unseen
ways to maintain and change individual personality, creativity, intelectual style, narrative and
interpersonal behavior.

The research on hidden non-verbal systems grew into the study of positive emotion and
fragrances, odorants, pheromones, and body mood odors. These substances, detected by the olfactory
system communicate emotion and influence mood, memory, reaction time and social behavior.
Evidence is accumulating to show that psychological well-being and physical health can be affected
positively by what we see, hear, smell and touch. And we contribute our own mood odors to the air.
We interact with nature through all sensory systems. The often cited research on flowers and floral
odors presents a co-evolutionary theory of emotion and the environment.
