follows is a general outline for the course. Instructors who teach the
course will modify activities as needs arise.
Class Activities
Week 1
Introduction to the course (Handout and Markel, Ch.1)
Writing Sample and class survey
Introduction to engineers' resumes and cover letters (Career Services
Guide and Markel, Ch. 16).
Begin drafts.
Discuss Technical Proposal topics (Introduce RneedsU)
Handout: Joel Arthur Barker, Defining a Paradigm
Week 2
Resume/Cover letter drafts:
Peer revision work
Textbook readings and discussion of letter forms and audience (Markel,
Ch. 5)
Handouts: Robert Silman, The Plan to Save Fallingwater; one additional
selection from the list of readings to help students underswtand the
paradigm concept.
Continue to discuss Technical Proposal topics.
Week 3
Cover Letter/Resume assignment due
Memo practicum: Summary/Analysis writing -- Go to web page for a sample
Activity Report: Content and form decisions
Discuss the assigned readings (last week's handouts) -- Collect worksheets
at start of class
Technical Proposal topics to finalize for next class
Week 4 (In the computer lab if scheduling allows)
Library tour: LSM Self Guided Tour handout and the Rutgers Libraries
web site with attention to sources in engineering
Readings and discussion on ethics (Handout and Markel, Ch. 2) -- Due

Technical Proposal topic (form to be completed during class)

Introduce User Manual assignment
Collaborative Project - Set up teams
Discuss strategies for primary research

Provide time for secondary research relating to the Technical Proposal
topic.
Ethics discussion -- collect worksheet from reading; see Markel Ch.

Continue research work for the technical proposal and user manual.
Annotated Bibliography of 6 sources for the midterm assignment.

Midterm paper due (memo to RneedsU that reviews scholarly sources from
engineering journals to establish basis for the technical proposal).
User Manual Project: Class time for teams to meet and plan.
Submit folder of all graded assignments done to date.
