What follows is a general outline for the course. Instructors who teach the course will modify activities as needs arise.

Class Activities

Week 1
Introduction to the course (Handout and Markel, Ch.1)
Writing Sample and class survey
Introduction to engineers' resumes and cover letters (Career Services Guide and Markel, Ch. 16).
Begin drafts.
Discuss Technical Proposal topics (Introduce RneedsU)
Handout: Joel Arthur Barker, Defining a Paradigm

Week 2
Resume/Cover letter drafts:
Peer revision work
Textbook readings and discussion of letter forms and audience (Markel, Ch. 5)
Handouts: Robert Silman, The Plan to Save Fallingwater; one additional selection from the list of readings to help students underswtand the paradigm concept.
Continue to discuss Technical Proposal topics.

Week 3
Cover Letter/Resume assignment due
Memo practicum: Summary/Analysis writing -- Go to web page for a sample
Activity Report: Content and form decisions
Discuss the assigned readings (last week's handouts) -- Collect worksheets at start of class
Technical Proposal topics to finalize for next class

Week 4 (In the computer lab if scheduling allows)
Library tour: LSM Self Guided Tour handout and the Rutgers Libraries web site with attention to sources in engineering
Readings and discussion on ethics (Handout and Markel, Ch. 2) -- Due next week
Technical Proposal topic (form to be completed during class)

Week 5 (In the computer lab if scheduling allows)
Introduce User Manual assignment
Collaborative Project - Set up teams
Discuss strategies for primary research
Refer to Markel, Chs. 4 and 20.
Provide time for secondary research relating to the Technical Proposal topic.
Ethics discussion -- collect worksheet from reading; see Markel Ch. 2.

Week 6 (In the computer lab if scheduling allows)
Continue research work for the technical proposal and user manual.
Annotated Bibliography of 6 sources for the midterm assignment.
Collect LSM Tour assignment
Introduce PowerPoint
Status of work; help needed -- time for questions.

Week 7
Midterm paper due (memo to RneedsU that reviews scholarly sources from engineering journals to establish basis for the technical proposal).
User Manual Project: Class time for teams to meet and plan.
Submit folder of all graded assignments done to date.
Select dates for Oral Presentations

Week 8
Student/teacher conferences
User Manual team presentations
Introduce the Oral Presentation assignment -- Web page; Markel Chs 14 & 22; video of past presentations

Week 9
Organizing the Technical Proposal Web pages and Markel, Chs. 13, 17, and 19).
Power Point strategies, especially for engineering topics.

Week 10
Oral Presentations

Week 11
Oral Presentations
Collect first draft of Technical Proposal

Week 12
Oral Presentations
Return Technical Proposal drafts with revision comments.

Week 13
Peer revision classes for the Technical Proposals

Week 14
Final Technical Proposal due on last class meeting date
