Mission
Statement
People of the Book is a religiously diverse collaboration
of campus ministries serving the New Brunswick/Piscataway campus of Rutgers,
The State University of New Jersey. Our mission is to build community
by
- Raising
awareness of and affirming the religious and cultural diversity of Rutgers
- Learning
about the beliefs, practices and histories of other religions, including
the resources in each religious tradition that welcome and support religious
and cultural diversity
- Modeling
civil and constructive conversation on religion and contemporary issues
on the academic campus
In fulfillment of our mission, every year or two our sponsoring campus
ministries select a book for reading and reflection. Our program is
modeled on “One Book" projects (community-wide reading programs),
initiated by the Washington
Center for the Book of the Library of Congress. The heart of our
program are Book Reflection Groups in which members of the Rutgers community
meet to reflect on the selected title in a spiritual climate of mutual
respect.
