INTERNATIONAL VISITOR AWARD 2006
THE DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS FOR THE 49th ANNUAL MEETING,
NOVEMBER 16-19, 2006
Each year the African
Studies Association funds the Annual Meeting attendance of 3 to 5 international
scholars. Scholars nominated may be of any nationality, though the
preponderance of awards is made to Africans. Preference is given to women and
junior scholars, and to individuals who have not recently visited
Sponsors must be African
Studies Association members and must be prepared to arrange and find financial
support for the visitor’s itinerary of at least eight
days before or after the ASA Annual Meeting during which time the guest may
visit one or more universities or other institutions. The extended time is
intended to allow visitors to complete their own research, to interact with
scholars with similar interests, and to purchase a less-expensive excursion
ticket with fixed travel dates. Visitors may wish to undertake trips of a
personal nature while they are in
While the ASA invites individual scholars to nominate themselves, the number of such awards is limited and the chance of success is much higher for sponsored individuals. The ASA will attempt to place self-sponsored individuals, though this is not guaranteed. Awardees without other sponsorship will be provided with transportation as close as possible to the actual Annual Meeting dates.

Instructions
1. All nominees (sponsored and self-nominees) or their sponsors should fill out Part A. Be sure to provide a mailing address AND an electronic contact, be it telephone, fax, telex, or email.
2. Sponsors should detail in their own cover letter the extent and nature of support available from institutional and other sources.
3. A short 2 to 3 page vita must be provided with all nominations.
4. All nominations must be accompanied by the abstract of the paper the nominee proposes to present at the Annual Meeting. The abstract must also be submitted, with the paper or panel proposal form (from the Call for Papers), to the ASA office for review by the National Program Committee.
5. The sponsor(s) of a nominated scholar must fill out Part B.
6. An itinerary must be submitted with the application. The itinerary must detail venue, purpose of visit, and arrival and departure dates.
7. The total number of pages must not exceed six (6) including the application form.
8. These forms, together with the abstract, vita, and itinerary, are due in the ASA office no later than March 15, 2006. Faxes will not be accepted, and the ASA Executive Office assumes no responsibility for their receipt. Incomplete and late applications cannot be considered. Individuals selected for support will be notified in July.
