Momotombo

Geothermal power is produced from hot springs on the south flank of Momotombo.  This is a major supplier of Nicaragua's electricity.

In 1980, when the geothermal development was well advanced, the fumarole field at the top of the volcano heated up to more than 900C and was seen to glow at night.  A cluster of microearthquakes increased the possibility of eruption. However, no full-fledged eruption occurred. This was an example of a seismo-volcanic crisis; a non-event in the historic record, but very likely an intrusion of fresh magma in volcanic history.  The majority of such "quiet" eruptions have gone unremarked because volcano monitoring has been inadequate.
