The summit area of Poás does not reval much about the shape of the volcano. The ridge in the background is the Platanar-Porvenir complex, a large shield volcano, much like Poás. Shield volcanoes dominate the volcanic front of Central Costa Rica. They are very large (100's of km3) and they have odd geochemistry for arc volcanoes. They are in many ways similar to the Galapagos hotspot volcanoes, thousands of km to the west.
