Election 2003: Results for Women Candidates

Pre-election press release available here.

Election 2003 resulted in the election of one new woman governor, but otherwise there were few changes in women's status in statewide and state legislative offices. In three of the four states with legislative elections, the number of women in 2004 will decrease from the 2003 figure; in the fourth state, women gained one seat.

Kentucky
Democrat Crit Luallen defeated Republican Linda Greenwell in the open seat race for state auditor. One other woman, Democrat Alice Woods Baesler, was on the ballot for agriculture commissioner and was defeated.

Louisiana
Louisiana elected its first woman governor, Kathleen Blanco (D) in a run-off election between the two top primary vote-getters. The Louisiana legislature will have one more woman than in 2003, with a net gain of three women in the Senate and a net loss of two women in the House.

Mississippi
Republican Amy Tuck was elected lieutenant governor over Democrat Barbara Blackmon. In state legislative races, there was a net loss of one woman, with a decrease of two in the Senate and an increase of one in the House (See table.)

New Jersey
New Jersey did not hold statewide elections. In the state legislative races, there was a net loss of one woman, with one additional woman in the Senate but two fewer in the Assembly. (See table.)

Virginia
Virginia did not hold statewide elections. The Virginia legislature had a net loss of four women, with the same number of women in the Senate and four fewer in the House.
