What Kind of Memory is a Photograph?

One of the questions that can be posed is whether a photograph could lie...or for that matter tell the truth?

This question is an attempt to get you to think about semantics. Semantic issues arise if we think that symbols refer to something other than themselves. So, if we have ideas in our minds, than do these ideas have a semantics...i.e, do they refer to something? Are all our ideas true? Do all or just some of our ideas refer to something?  Does the question of how our ideas get into our minds bear on these questions.

Below is a figure that describes in a rudimentary fashion how photographic film works. Read it over ... it may help you to think a bit more clearly about some of these issues. (Or it may just confuse you more...but at least you will understand a little better how film works!)
