I have reservations about the relationship between academic publishers and the unpaid labor on which their profits depend, particularly as they have chosen to destabilize that relationship in their favor. The old arrangement whereby a subscription provided permanent access to the work has been replaced by a temporary leasing arrangement. However, that is the agreement which they impose.
I would however urge all referees, editors, and authors to review their relationships with whatever publishers they assist voluntarily, and to discontinue any relationships which are not clearly in the interests of the profession.
