J-1 Extension of Program
Procedures for Students and Scholars

File your application for extension approximately 30-60 days prior to the ending date on your pink IAP-66 form.

How to File
J-1s in the Student category should follow the procedures below when requesting an extension of J-1 status. Instructions for exchange visitors in the Professor or Research Scholar categories follow the instructions for students.

Special note: if you are planning on traveling outside the U.S. in the next few months, check with your international student or faculty adviser before completing the extension application.

Procedures for J-1 Visitors in the Student Category

  1. Pick up an International Student Academic Status Report form from the center and have your adviser complete and certify the items requested. (Note: if you have already graduated
    and have been authorized for Academic Training, you may not need this form. Speak with your international student adviser to determine what supporting documents to bring.)
  2.
  3. Bring to the center:
    1. the completed Adviser's Report Form (if required);
    2. your passport and I-94 forms of yourself and any visa dependents (for
      review only--do NOT leave these at the center with the rest of
      your application);
    3. proof of your current funding source AND amount, to add up to a minimum of $10,500 per year in living expenses PLUS tuition and fees. Proof would consist of an assistantship or fellowship letter, a bank statement, a letter from your employer if you are on academic training, or another official document. If you have visa dependents, proof of additional funding will be required -- proof of $4,000 funding for your spouse and $3,000 for each child, as well as proof that you have purchased the required health insurance policy for your dependents.
    4. Fill out the back of page 1 of a blank IAP-66 form. Be sure to complete all relevant items and to sign and date the form. Leave the form with a center secretary.

Procedures for J-1 Visitors in the Professor or Research Scholar Category

  1. Request that the center send your department a "Request for Certificate of Eligibility" form (or "IAP Request Form"). If you wish to request and pick the form up yourself, you may, but ultimately it is the department that must complete it and obtain the necessary approval signatures.
