Procedures for Transferring FROM Rutgers University to Another School in the U.S.
If you are transferring from Rutgers University to another U.S. institution, follow one of the procedures outlined below, according to your situation.
Individuals travelling outside the United States prior to beginning your association with the new school:
If your visa has expired or if you never obtained a visa in the status you currently hold because you changed your status after coming to the U.S.:
- Before you leave the U.S., please notify the Center for International Faculty and Student Services at Rutgers that you plan to transfer so we may adjust our records.
- Go to the U.S. Embassy or Consulate overseas. Take with you:
- your passport
- I-20 form (F-1 students) or IAP-66 form (J-1 visitors) from the new school
- documentation of financial support.
- The visa issuing officer will give you a visa with the name of the new school noted on it.
- When you re-enter the U.S., you must show again at the port of entry your passport, the I-20 form (F-1 students) or IAP-66 (J-1 visitors) from the new school and your financial documentation.
If you have a valid (unexpired, multiple-entry) visa in the status you will hold at the new school:
Individuals NOT leaving the United States before beginning your association with the new school:
A. If you are an F-1 Student (J-1 students and scholars: please see below)
NOTE: The endorsement of transfer on your I-20-ID (Student) Copy, if transferring without leaving the U.S, is essential. Without it, your transfer has not been validated and you will be considered out of status 15 days after enrolling in the new school. Be sure to obtain the endorsement!
If you are a J-1 Student, Professor or Research Scholar
NOTE: The processing of your IAP-66 form (if transferring without leaving the U.S) is essential. Without it, your transfer has not been validated and you will be considered out of status. Be sure to obtain and retain the pink copy after it has been processed by your new school.
