TRANSFER TO RUTGERS
(F-1 and J-1 Status Holders Only)

Procedures for Transferring TO Rutgers University from Another School in the U.S. If you are transferring to Rutgers University from another U.S. institution, follow one of the procedures outlined below, according to your situation.

Individuals travelling outside the United States prior to beginning your association with Rutgers:

If your visa has expired or if you never obtained a visa in the status you currently hold because you changed your status after coming to the U.S.:

  1. Before you leave the U.S., you should notify your international student/scholar adviser at your old school that you plan to transfer so that the school records can be adjusted.
  2. Go to the U.S. Embassy or Consulate overseas. Take with you:
    (a) your passport
    (b) I-20 form (F-1 students) or IAP-66 form (J-1 visitors) from Rutgers University
    (c) documentation of financial support.
  3. The visa issuing officer will give you a visa and will mark "Rutgers University" on it.
  4. When you re-enter the U.S., you must show again at the port of entry your passport, the I-20 form (F-1 students) or IAP-66 (J-1 visitors) from Rutgers University and your financial documentation.

If you have a valid (unexpired, multiple-entry) visa in the status you will hold at Rutgers:

  1. You should notify your international student/scholar adviser at your previous school that you have transferred or plan to transfer, so that school records may be adjusted.
  2. You do not have to go the U.S. consulate. Simply re-enter the U.S. with your new Rutgers I-20 or IAP-66 and financial documentation. Point out to the immigration officer at the port of entry that upon this entry you are transferring to a different institution.

Individuals NOT leaving the United States before beginning your association with Rutgers:

If you are an F-1 Student (J-1 students and scholars: please see below)

  1. Notify your previous school that you intend to transfer to Rutgers.
  2. Carefully read and sign bottom of page 1 of Rutgers I-20 and bring it with your passport and all other visa related documents to the Center for International Faculty and Student Services within 15 days of enrollment here.
  3. An international student adviser will process your papers, endorse your I-20 ID (Student) Copy with Rutgers' name, and notify both your previous school and the immigration service of your transfer.

NOTE: The endorsement of transfer on your I-20-ID (Student) Copy, if transferring without leaving the U.S, is essential. Without it, your transfer has not been validated and you will be considered out of status 15 days after enrolling at Rutgers. Be sure to obtain the endorsement!

If you are a J-1 Student, Professor or Research Scholar

  1. Obtain a Form IAP-66 from Rutgers University.
  2. Take the Rutgers IAP-66 to your international student/scholar adviser at your previous school and obtain a release signature on section 8 of the form.
  3. Carefully read and sign the back of page 1 of the IAP-66 and bring the whole form with your passport and all other visa related documents to the Center for International Faculty and Student Services.
  4. The international student/scholar adviser will notify the United States Information Agency of your transfer, and return the pink copy of the processed IAP-66 to you. This is your transfer.

Note: the processing of your IAP-66 form (if transferring without leaving the U.S) is essential. Without it, your transfer has not been validated and you will be considered out of status. Be sure to obtain and retain the pink copy after it has been processed by the Center for International Faculty and Student Services at Rutgers or returned by the INS!
