BME senior Ronn Friedlander has received funding from the Aresty Research Center for Undergraduates. This award will support Ronn's travel to the upcoming BMES Conference, where his abstract was accepted for presentation.

Sumati Sundaram defended her dissertation today, entitled "Interplay of Polymer and Oligonucleotide Properties in the Nature of Antisense Effects". Sumati is the first Ph.D. to graduate from the group. Congratulations, Sumati!

Welcome to the newest member of our group! Dr. Vidya Iyer joins us as a postodoctoral associate. Vidya recently finished her Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Iowa State and will be co-advised by Marianthi Ierapetritou.

Congratulations to our seniors, Mark Hwang and Clare Tang, who graduated with BS degrees in Biomedical Engineering, and to Jeffrey Ly, who graduated with an MS in Biomedical Engineering today. Clare is doing an industrial intership this summer and will return to Rutgers in Fall as part of her BS/MS program, Mark will be starting the MD/PhD program at U. of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Jeffrey will begin work at Merck. Best wishes in your future endeavors!

Our research group continues to grow! Juan Lagos has joined us as a part-time Ph.D. student in the Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering. When he's not with us, Juan holds down a full-time job at Schering-Plough.

Welcome to three new members of the research group! Nimish Gupta comes from IIT-Madras and is co-advised by Prof. Marianthi Ierapetritou. Dominik Naczynski completed his undergraduate degree at Cornell and is co-advised by Prof. Prabhas Moghe. Carolyn Waite completed her degree at Lafayette College and is a trainee in the IGERT Training Program on Nanopharmaceutics. Nimish, Dom and Carolyn are all first-year students in the Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering.

Michelle Burley, Stephen Guzikowski, Sumati Sundaram, and Hong Yang represented Rutgers at the American Institute of Chemical Engineers conference in San Francisco this week. Michelle presented a poster entitled "Retinoic acid induced changes in hepatocyte morphology and function". Stephen spoke on "Metabolic and genomic analysis of acetaminophen metabolism and induced-hepatotoxicity", Sumati on "Interplay of polymer and DNA properties on the dynamics of antisense inhibition ", and Hong on "Reaction and pathway analysis of hepatic metabolism".

Professor Prabhas Moghe received an NSF Nanoscale Interdisciplinary Research Team (NIRT) award. The award, which is $1M for 4 years, is from a project entitled “Ligand Nanodisplay for Cell Cytointernalization and SuperActivation”. Prof. Moghe is the PI of the team comprised of Professors Roth, Tsakalakos, and Talaga from Rutgers and Prof. Schwarzbauer (Princeton).

Lavanya Peddada has been awarded a graduate training fellowship in the Rutgers-NSF IGERT on Integratively Engineered Biointerfaces. Lavanya is working on the development of peptide-based biomaterials to direct oligonucleotides into and within cells to their mRNA targets.

Kimberly Argen joins us from Cooper Union, where she will be a senior next year in Engineering with a biomechanical emphasis, and is co-advised by Prof. Marianthi Ierapetritou. Camil Aponte joins us as part of the RISE and ISURF programs. Camil is a mathematics major at U. of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras and is co-advised by Prof. Stan Dunn.

Sumati gave an oral presentation on "The role of vector in the dynamics of antisense activity" and Stephen gave a poster presentation entitled "Modeling Regulatory and Metabolic Mechanisms for Acetaminophen-induced Hepatotoxicity".
