Tutorials
in
Protein Purification
(3 day hands-on instruction in Downstream Processing)
|
In
an intimate, small group laboratory setting, learn the details
of protein purification from an expert. Join Professor William
Ward as he leads you through the step-by-step purification of
a model protein, hands-on from start to finish. Under his constant
supervision, you will prepare a crude extract, administer several
batch purification steps, and then achieve purity in a series
of high resolution chromatography steps. You will then judge
purity of the final product in comparison with your crude extract
by calculating specific activity and by analyzing your product
by size exclusion HPLC and/or SDS gel electrophoresis.
As you assist in setting up equipment,
carrying out experiments, and analyzing results, you will have
many opportunities to benefit from Professor Ward’s extensive
experience as a long-time, practicing protein biochemist.
So that your specific questions
can be properly addressed in one-on-one dialogue, the number
of attendees will be limited.
Course sessions run three days, Friday thru Sunday with breakfast
and lunch provided on Saturday and Sunday.

Faculty Coordinator/Instructor
Dr.
William W. Ward
Associate
Professor of Biochemistry
School
of Environmental and Biological Sciences,
Rutgers University
and Director of C.R.E.B.B.
As a full time
research scientist, Dr. Ward has spent 42 years studying
the biochemistry of luminescence in jellyfish and ctenophores,
from the Florida gulf coast to Washington's Puget Sound,
to the Jersey shore. He is an acclaimed world expert in
bioluminescence and protein purification, with special emphasis
on green-fluorescent protein (GFP).
Dr. Ward is a noted teacher and seminar leader with more
than 22 years of experience with adult professional audiences.
He is the first person to use GFP in college-level lab courses
and in hands-on corporate biotechnology training programs
and seminars. He is the founder of the Rutgers University
center, CREBB, that has delivered two decades-worth of hands-on
short courses in biotechnology to over 2000 individuals
in the biopharmaceutical community.
As a pioneer of GFP and fluorescent protein
research, Dr. Ward has been providing purified GFP and anti-GFP
antibodies to the biotech industry on a contract basis for
over 15 years. Based, in part, on the success of this entrepreneurial
effort and the success of his teaching center, Dr. Ward
has started his own biotech company, Brighter Ideas, Inc.
Dr. Ward's vision for Brighter Ideas, Inc. is to design
and create commercial products which utilize GFP and fluorescent
protein technology. Currently, some of these products include
unique high throughput screening Protease/Protease Inhibitor
assays, protein purification kits, and antibodies.
