computer lab at the Career and Interview Center is the largest
with 10 computers. In order to use one of our computers, we need
your name and student ID (NetID). If you haven't filled out a

Q)
How do I find a job on campus?
A) A good place to find on-campus jobs is the Office of Student
Employment, located in Records Hall on the College Avenue Campus.
It's a good idea to bring a resume to the academic and administrative
departments that you are interested in working for.
Q)
If I am relocating to another part of the country, can Career
Services still help?
A) Yes! We can arrange reciprocal services at most colleges and
universities around the country. Contact Richard
White, Director of Career Services, at riwhite@rutgers.edu.
Include your name, college, major(s), month and date of graduation,
your current mailing address, and up to three schools where you
would like reciprocity. Dr. White will prepare letters on your
behalf and send copies to you. NOTE: New York University and California
public universities do not grant reciprocity. Some schools may
charge a fee for services.

Q)
I am a senior and I haven't done much about planning my future
career. How do I decide what I want to do and how to get there?
A) Our staff of professional counselors is trained to provide
personal and individual assistance with these important issues.
They are attuned to the stresses that seniors experience as they
complete their degree requirements and seek employment or admission
to graduate school. Call either office to set up an appointment.
Q)
I am a sophomore and I need to declare a major, how can I figure
out what to major in and how it relates to a future career?
A) It is fairly common for first-year students and sophomores
to be unsure about their choice of majors and future career plans.
Contact any Career Services office and schedule a one-on-one appointment
with one of our career counselors. The counselor will explore
with you a variety of major and career options that suit your
interests, skills and personality.
Q)
I to want to major in history, but my parents want me to major
in business. They're concerned about future job opportunities
with a liberal arts degree. What should I do?
A) The first step is to set up an appointment with a career counselor
ASAP. Bear in mind that academic choices and career choices are
not the same. If you're a history major, that doesn't mean that
you must become a historian or history teacher. Many employers
that recruit at Rutgers are more concerned with skills than one's
major. They are looking for strong communication, writing, analytical,
and organizational skills - skills that your liberal arts degree
can help you to develop.

Q)
Can I have my graduate school personal statement critiqued?
A) Contact Richard White at riwhite@rutgers.edu to
set up an appointment to have your personal statement critiqued.
Send a draft of your personal statement to Dr. White at least
one day prior to the meeting. Meetings will take place at 56 College
Avenue.
Q)
Does Career Services offer any skill or interest assessments?
A) All Career Services offices offer skill,
interest and personality instruments. You must meet first
with a career counselor to determine your needs. Call to inquire
about all instruments.
Q)
Do I need to wear a suit for a mock interview?
A) We recommend that you come for your practice interview dressed
professionally. It helps to better simulate an actual interview
and we can offer you advice on your business attire.
Q)
What is the Alumni Career Network?
A)
The Rutgers University Alumni Career Network is a database of
graduates from the Camden, New Brunswick, and Newark campuses
who have volunteered to be mentors and share their career experiences
with students and other alumni. These individuals have diverse
academic backgrounds and represent many career fields. Currently,
there are nearly 1,500 mentors in the database.

Q)
How do I access full-time jobs and internship listings?
A) Visit the Career Services website and click on "Full-time Jobs" or "Internships." Many different
job search options and services are available for your review.
We also recommend that you meet with a counselor to review your
unique job search needs.
Q)
How are "job listings" different from CareerKnight?
A) Job listings databases offer Rutgers students
and alumni over 24,000 jobs and internships from over 7,000 employers
each year. Positions cover a broad range of opportunities, primarily
in New Jersey and adjacent states. Employers have specifically
targeted these jobs to Rutgers University. Interested students
apply directly to the employer. Interviews will be held at the
employer site. CareerKnight is a different program which brings employers to campus to recruit students for full-time
jobs, internships, and co-op opportunities.
Q)
Some of the listings are old - - is it worth applying?
A) Yes! Perhaps the employer has not yet filled the position or
is seeking more than one candidate. Some positions, particularly
internships, remain on the system for several months. If you have
questions about a specific listing, please contact us.
Q)
Are all of these positions paid?
A) The majority of the positions listed on CareerKnight are paid.
However, there are some internship listings that are unpaid or
for credit only. This information is usually included in the job
description.

Q)
How do I find an internship?
A) Visit the Career Services website
and click on "Internships." You
will find many services and programs for you to utilize in your
internship search. It is also recommended that you meet with a
career counselor to discuss your unique internship needs.
Q)
How do I find out about getting credit for an internship?
A) The ability to receive academic credit for an internship is
determined by each college and/or academic department at Rutgers.
Arrangements must be made before beginning the internship.
Q)
Is it ever too late to find an internship?
A) Our office receives internship listings every day throughout
the year. It is important to start your internship search several
months in advance to increase your chances of finding the perfect
opportunity. Most students begin actively searching between November
and February for securing the most competitive summer internship
opportunities. However, it's never too late.
Q)
As a first-year student, can I use the internship service?
A) Students obtain internships throughout their college careers.
Some employers are looking for juniors, seniors, or graduate students
only, but many will consider candidates in all years and all majors.
Q)
Do you have any internship listings in my field?
A) Each year Career Services receives over 2,000 internship listings
for all majors in over 30 job categories. To maximize your chances
of finding an internship, it is important to be flexible in your
internship search and consider a variety of opportunities both
related and unrelated to your major.
Q) I am an F-1 international student looking
for an internship. How can I identify
companies that will hire me?
A)
First, you need to visit the international student office on campus,
if you have not already done so. They will explain the types of
positions for which you can apply and how an internship will lend
to your practical training requirement, if at all. Clarifying
this information will help you market your employment status to
employers.
Second, whether or not employers can hire students with F-1 Visas
will vary depending on the employer and their specific hiring
policy. Many employers do not want to hire F-1 students for internships
because they are looking to identify potential full-time hires,
and they cannot hire an F-1 Visa candidate for full-time employment,
based on their hiring guidelines. With the recession, many employers
cannot hire F-1 candidates (for full-time positions) because they
cannot validate the need for this. Due to the increased unemployment
rate there is a sufficient candidate pool of permanent residents
and US citizens to fill jobs.
You can also explore "Goinglobal.com." Career Services has partnered with this site to provide career information from around the world. Career Services also provides the H1B Visa Employers Database for international students. In addition, you may want to schedule a counseling appointment
at one of our offices to discuss your situation in more detail.
This will give you an opportunity to identify additional resources
or avenues to pursue your internship search aside from the on-campus
interviewing program and online listings for which you may not
meet the requirements. Finally, you may want to consider looking
for an internship abroad if this option
works for you.

Q)
What is the CareerKnight system?
A) CareerKnight is the Rutgers on-campus interviewing program.
Each year nearly 300 employers conduct interviews for full-time
jobs and 100 employers for summer internships and engineering
co-op positions directly on campus at the Career and Interview
Center in the Busch Campus Center.
Q)
How do I update my user profile and resume?
A) You should review your profile and resume on a regular basis
(2 - 3 times per year) to make sure the information is up-to-date
and accurate. Simply go to CareerKnight,
type in your username and password, and then update your profile.
Q)
How many resumes can I have on the system?
A) You can have up to 10 resume versions on the system, but you
should need no more than two or three versions, depending on your
career objectives. At the minimum, you should have one
version of your resume on the system:
1. This resume should be uploaded from a disk from Microsoft Word
or other software. This resume will be used for the CareerKnight
system.
Q)
How do I find out which employers are coming to campus to recruit?
A) From the CareerKnight tab select "Interview Schedules" and enter the dates for the
recruiting period in which you are interested. Be sure to note
the resume submission deadlines, which are typically four weeks
prior to the interview date.
Q)
How do I check which employers I have submitted my resume to?
A) From the CareerKnight main screen, click on "Interviews I Qualify For," "My Task List," and select "All Upcoming Interview Schedules." This
feature tracks all of the resumes you have submitted for CareerKnight. You can also see if you were pre-selected for an
interview and sign up.
Q)
What if I forget my password?
A) From the CareerKnight screen you can click on "Forgot my Password."
You can then send them an e-mail message stating that you have
forgotten your password. You will receive it shortly.
Q)
When are the "event" listings, including cancellations, updated?
Do I need to keep checking?
A) Event listings are updated daily, so it is important that you
keep checking the CareerKnight system on a regular basis. The
students who have the greatest success on CareerKnight are using
the system daily.
Q)
When do internship recruiting "events" begin?
A) Typically, internship events first appear on CareerKnight
in early November for spring recruiting events, though some organizations
recruit in the fall.
Q)
As a senior pursuing graduate school, am I eligible to submit
resumes for internship events on CareerKnight?
A) All students graduating between 12/09 and 5/11 can view internship
recruiting events and submit resumes. For seniors to become internship eligible, please contact Career
Services at (732) 932-7287.

Q)
What is meant by "Does Not Meet Requirements for this Event?"
A) Each employer has its own set of selection criteria that are
used when selecting candidates. The criteria may include GPA,
academic major, citizenship requirements, or graduation date.
If the recruiting event has specific requirements, they will be
listed beneath the "Job Information."
Q)
What is an employer information session? What if I can't attend?
Should I contact the employer?
A) Employer information sessions are typically held the night
before the employer's on-campus interview. We strongly recommend
that you attend these events because it is a great opportunity
for you to learn about the employer. If you can't attend, it is
not necessary to contact the employer unless they specifically
require you to RSVP. Explain to the recruiter at your interview
why you were unable to attend. Recommended attire at information
sessions is business casual.
Q)
How can I find out more about the job or the employer?
A) Typically the best way to learn about an employer is to go
right to the employer's website. For example if you want to research
Johnson & Johnson, go to www.jnj.com. You can also use a search
engine such as Google, using the employer name as the keyword.
Q)
How do I know if I have an interview?
A) For each listing on CareerKnight, there is a sign-up period
noted. Go to CareerKnight and click on "My Task List. Scheduling usually takes place from Monday
to Wednesday for pre-selected candidates and Thursday for alternate
candidates.
Q)
What is an alternate?
A) Many employers choose two lists of candidates, a "pre-select"
list and an "alternate" list. If the pre-select candidates do
not fill up all of the interview time slots, the alternate candidates
can take the available slots. This is on a first-come, first-serve
basis and alternates are not guaranteed a time slot.
Q)
What if I missed the sign-up period?
A) If you have been selected for an interview but have missed
the sign-up period, you can contact the Career Services Administrative
Office at (732) 932-7287 for full-time, internship and co-op positions.
Q)
How do I cancel an interview?
A) If you are canceling an interview during the regular sign-up
period, you can do it right on the CareerKnight system. When canceling
after the sign-up period, you must contact the Career Services
Administrative Office at (732) 932-7287 for full-time and internship/co-op
positions.
Q)
What if I missed the resume submission deadline? Can I contact
the employer on my own?
A) Try emailing or faxing a copy of your resume directly to the
employer, using the contact information on the CareerKnightlisting.
