What do Employers Look for in an Intern? An interview is your opportunity to make employers want to hire you. It is crucial that you are articulate, confident and professional. Do your research and know about the organization and position you are applying for. Know how you fit into the company and how you will help it move toward success. Employers look for these qualities in candidates: Communications and Interpersonal Skills: Being able to communicate effectively with others and deal with various personalities in the workplace are extremely important. Also, written and oral communication skills are desirable qualities to possess because employers want to know that you can successfully organize your thoughts and ideas. Intelligence: Some employers use a GPA as a way to screen job candidates. Good grades can indicate one’s ability to understand the assignment and complete it well. Enthusiasm: An employer needs to know that you are ready and willing to give 100% of your efforts to your job. Employers are impressed by candidates who are responsive and motivated. Flexibility: Being able to adapt to new thoughts and ideas are qualities that are highly valued by employers. As companies make changes, they need to know that the employee will be able to evolve with company and show flexibility. Leadership: Even in entry-level positions employers want a confident, self-starter who shows evidence of leadership qualities. During college years, take the time to join organizations and take leadership roles. Build upon your skills so that once entering the workforce you will not be afraid of taking on additional responsibilities. High-Energy Level: Employers want to know that you are willing to work hard and are committed to your job. You will be measured by your performance. Therefore, they want to know that you are dedicated and will produce great results either in a team setting or individually. Maturity: Maturity essentially means knowing how to handle yourself in a professional environment. Do you demonstrate a sense of maturity that enables you to deal positively and effectively with situations and people? Skill: Do you possess the positive combination of education and skills required for the position you are seeking? Do you have the ability to identify and work toward specific goals? Do such goals challenge your abilities?
