Rutgers-in-Washington: FAQ Does RIW find me a position? Though RIW can sometimes help students identify internship opportunities, it does not place students in internship positions and it does not help specific students find specific positions. Career Services, however, can facilitate the internship process for you and a great way to get started is to schedule an appointment with a Career Services counselor. The Career Services website is another great resource. Keep in mind that Washington internships vary by type and by topic: some are paid, others are unpaid and some are politically focused but just as many are not. How does the program work? RIW is, put simply, a series of social, cultural, and professional events for Rutgers students spending their summer in DC. They provide a way for Rutgers students to experience the capital while networking with other RU students, in addition to successful Rutgers alumni. You can attend any or all events and the only qualification for eligibility is your status as a student at Rutgers (regardless of campus or college). The events are free and you can attend if you are living, working, or visiting Washington during the months of June and July. What are the benefits of RIW? Regardless of your field of interest, RIW provides countless opportunities to network with successful alumni and other Rutgers students in the DC area. This networking will be beneficial whether you are looking for contacts for future job assistance, want to meet other students in the Washington, DC area, or just want something to do outside of work. Additionally, RIW makes it a lot easier to see and experience things that are uniquely DC. From behind-the-scenes tours of some of the city’s most popular museums to social events with other schools to lunches and dinners with some of Rutgers’ most distinguished alumni, the program opens all kinds of doors to make your DC experience the best it can be. What are my next steps?
How do I find out about RIW events? Contact the RIW Coordinator at ruwash@rci.rutgers.edu to get on the Rutgers in Washington listserv. In addition to information on events, this listserv is used to distribute specific DC internship postings. I'm an alum in DC—can I participate in Rutgers in Washington? While the majority of events hosted by Rutgers in Washington are for current University students, there are several events throughout the summer that are open to alumni. These events are advertised through the Rutgers Club of DC. Alumni are invited to post DC-based internship listings for their companies or firms through the RIW listserv (contact RIW Program Coordinator at ruwash@rci.rutgers.edu) and the Career Services website (contact Dorothy Kerr, Career Services’ executive manager of employer services at 732-932-7287 or daf@rutgers.edu). Finally, alumni are always welcome to contribute to RIW by suggesting interesting ideas for events over the summer, informing RIW of upcoming events they can participate in, or hosting informal or formal events for Rutgers students. I still have more questions—where can I find out more? E-mail ruwash@rci.rutgers.edu for any questions regarding the program.
