Study Abroad Action Plan

Because you will be out of the country for a semester or an entire year, you will not be able to participate in some of the services normally utilized by juniors. However, there are some tasks you can accomplish during your sophomore and senior years which will help keep your career and/or graduate school plans on track.

Sophomore Year

  • Early in the year visit any Career Services office and obtain your free copy of the Career Services Guide or read the online version. The Guide has articles about job hunting, resume writing, graduate school preparation, and on-campus interviewing. Our online events calendar lists seminars and programs planned for the current semester. Similar programs will be offered during your senior year.
  • Learn about career options by attending career panels. See the monthly events calendar for details.
  • Become familiar with one of our two Career Libraries in the Busch Campus Center and 46 College Avenue. These offer books covering a wide range of career topics: job search, internship, resumes, and industry profiles.
  • Attend the Internship Career Day in early February to identify and meet employers who may consider you for employment either next summer or following your return from overseas.
  • Meet with Rutgers international students who come from the country where you will be studying. The International Center at 180 College Avenue can help you identify appropriate students.

Junior Year

  • While abroad, stay in touch by visiting our website.

Summer Following Junior Year

  • Visit a Career Services office and schedule an appointment with a career counselor.
  • Develop your résumé, and have it critiqued by a career counselor during "drop-in hours."
  • If considering graduate study, visit our graduate school planning section.
  • Visit one of our career libraries.

Senior Year

  • Since you may have some catching up to do, it's important to get an early start on your job search or graduate school applications.

All Students

  • Visit any Career Services office and pick up your copy of the latest Career Services Guide. Review for helpful ideas.
  • Attend relevant workshops and programs.
  • Review your career goals and possible graduate school plans with a career counselor.

If You're Pursuing the Job Market

  • Learn about CareerKnight and many other employment-related services. Access CareerKnight weekly from September to April to review company job descriptions, submit résumés, find out if you have been selected for an interview, and schedule your interview
  • Speak to professionals in your field of interest through the Alumni Career Network, available on our website.
  • Learn about opportunities with specific employers by attending employer information sessions.
  • If you haven't done so previously, have your resume critiqued by a career counselor during "drop-in hours."
  • Attend career days: Engineering & Computer Science, Business & Liberal Arts, Math & Actuarial, Diversity, Education, Government & Non-Profit, Science and New Jersey Collegiate.
