Rutgers Internship & Co-op Program

(Deadline to apply September 1, 2011)

Welcome to the Rutgers Internship and Co-op Program page sponsored by Career Services and the School of Arts and Sciences.  The goal of this program is to assist students in gaining exposure to the professional world of work while gaining hands-on career-related experience.

This program is open to all Rutgers-New Brunswick undergraduate students, regardless of college or major.  This program is an ideal choice if:

  • your department or school offers few or no academic credits for internships and co-ops;
  • the internship or co-op you wish to pursue does not relate directly to your major;
  • you have yet to declare a major and wish to intern or co-op in a field that interests you;
  • you do not meet the requirements for your departmental internship program and have been referred to the Rutgers Internship and Co-op Program.

Program Requirements

To participate in the program, the following criteria must be met:

  1. Have a cumulative GPA of 2.75
  2. Have completed 30 credits, including a minimum of 12 credits at Rutgers if a transfer student
  3. Present verifiable proof of the internship or co-op, subject to the instructor's approval
  4. Have been enrolled with a minimum of 6 credits the semester prior to the internship

Getting Started - Application

  • Students – learn more about the process of how to get started and complete an application.
  • Employers – learn more about the recruiting process at Rutgers and how to post a position.

Internship vs. Co-op

What is the difference between an internship and a co-op?

Internships are:

  1. Full-time work experiences for up to three months, often during the summer
  2. Part-time work experiences for an open timeframe (i.e., September-December)
  3. Paid or unpaid
  4. Credit or not credit-bearing (usually up to 3 credits)
  5. Focused on juniors; open to sophomores and first-year students

They are generally a low-risk way to explore career options that students are considering.

Internship Track: Students must work a minimum of 180 total hours (i.e., 12 hours a week x 15 weeks). During the summer, students typically work full-time (i.e., 30-40 hours a week for 12-15 weeks).

Co-ops are:

  1. Typically full-time, six-month work experiences (i.e., January-June)
  2. Usually paid and credit-bearing
  3. Students are not usually taking classes at the same time
  4. Focused on juniors; open to sophomores and first-year students
  5. More formal partnerships between students, educational institutions, and employers, with specific responsibilities for each party

Co-op Track: Students must work full-time—typically 35-40 hours a week for a minimum of 25 weeks (a minimum of 750 hours must be completed). Students work during the day and can take an additional 6 credits (i.e., 2 evening courses) to maintain full-time student status.

Student Agreement: Students enrolled in a SAS internship course are required to adhere to all personnel rules, regulations, and other standard requirements of the host organization and to complete the internship or co-op as agreed, meeting the required hours, start and end date, and all assignment deadlines. The course is graded on a pass/fail and credits earned count towards graduation.

The course requirements include successful completion of work assignment and hours, monthly career-related assignments, a final reflection paper, and evaluations.

Note: If you are a SEBS student looking to fulfill your experience-based education requirement, please visit the SPIN website at sebsspin.rutgers.edu/ to learn more about how you can qualify your job or internship for academic credits.

Additional Notes:

Students enrolled in the program are responsible for finding their own positions. Career Services does not place students, but will assist students with the process.

It is strongly recommended that ALL students who plan to enroll in the Rutgers Internship and Co-op Program attend the "All About Internships" seminar.  This workshop will walk students through the process of finding an internship or co-op position and how to enroll in the program. Please call 732-445-6127ext. 0, or visit the Career Services monthly events section of our website for more information.

Benefits of the Experience

  • Earn income to cover a significant portion of your college expenses
  • Improve your employment prospects at graduation
