Mrs. Marie Hulcher Deis, age 78, passed away on Saturday, September 15, 2001. A life-long resident of Hampton, she devoted hours of service to numerous community organizations and clubs. Her optimism, enthusiasm, sense of humor, and energy were matched only by her devotion to her family and to her many friends. She faced obstacles in her life with boundless determination and courage, and enjoyed to the fullest every moment of her life.
Mrs. Deis was a graduate of Hampton High School and of Blackstone College for Girls and was active in the alumni associations for both schools. She was also a member of St. John's Episcopal Church and supported that church through her membership in various church circles, in the Women of the Church, in the hand bell choir, and in prayer groups. In addition, she was a member of the DAR, Chapter A of the PEO Sisterhood, and the Hampton Women's Club. She served for many years on the Election Board and most recently served on a municipal committee studying handicapped services in Hampton. She loved reading books and traveling at home and abroad, but above all, she loved music, both classical and popular. She regularly attended performances of the Virginia Opera Company as well as concerts at the Charles H. Taylor Arts Center and other formal and informal concerts throughout the area; she herself was much in demand as an accordion-player at various club meetings and at church.
Mrs. Deis was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Bert C. Deis; by her sisters Anna Stanley and Margaret Block; and by her brothers Charles Hulcher and Raymond Hulcher. Elwood "Cocky" Foster, her close companion and best friend in later years, preceded her in death, as well.
She is survived by her two children and their spouses, and three much-loved grandchildren. Her son, Dr. Frank H. Deis, lives with his wife Louise Deis in Highland Park, New Jersey. Their son, Thomas F. Deis, attends college in Boston. Dr. Elizabeth Jane Deis, her daughter, lives in Farmville, Virginia with her husband, Dr. Lowell T. Frye, and their children Lowell Charles Deis Frye and Alice Elizabeth Deis Frye. Mrs. Deis is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Metta Delk, of Hampton, and one brother, Dr. Frank Hulcher, of Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
