For ten years I was a partner in a tax preparation firm that had a large client base, three offices and seven employees. Founded in 1985 and partnership dissolved in 1995. Duties and responsibilities included all aspects of day-to-day small business operation.

Solidarity for Tax Advocacy
Washington, DC

Director of nonprofit political action and advocacy organization that represented the tax interests of lower-income populations. Coordinated a coalition of several community-based tax advocates, that included Latino Economic Development Association, Mayor’s Office of Latino Affairs, Ayuada, INC., Task Force for Economic Justice. Presented position papers to U.S. Tax Court, District of Columbia’s Office of Finance and Revenue, D.C City Council and U.S. Congress. Developed program for District of Columbia to increase communication between Washington, DC’s Hispanic community and the Office of Finance and Revenue. Established a pool of tax attorneys who would represent low income clients and funded four test cases for Earned-Income Credit compliance program of the Internal Revenue Service.

Adams Morgan Day
Washington, DC

Co-director of large street festival attended by over 250,000 persons, with 325 vendors, five stages, art show, community-based non-profit showcase, and a carnival. For six years handled all aspects of festival needs, with Karen Millgate as co-director. This included, but was not limited to, booking musical and dance talent, managing media relations, coordinating vendor sales, and stage/sound contracting, day-of operations including supervision of construction, security and volunteer programs.
Worked with Washington City Paper and the Washington Post Weekend section on a special advertisting section that highlighted the festival. I also scheduled stage acts and produced the festival program. Pre-festival planning included development of "Taste of Adams Morgan" fundraising event. The position involved six months of planning for a one day event. As co-dircector I was required to liason with the Mayor's Office of Emergency Preparedness, DC Office of Tourism, DC City Council, and several major festival backers. I also prepared reports to the foundation's Board of Directors and to a Community Advisory Board .
