The Office of Social Justice Education and LGBT Communities (SJE), formerly the Office of Diverse Community Affairs and LGBT Concerns, continues to provide educational, social and leadership development programs and activities for LGBT students, allies, and staff/faculty Liaisons for LGBT Students. SJE also continues to coordinate the monitoring of incidents of bias and hate through the Bias Prevention Education Committee.
The Office of Social Justice Education and LGBT Communities also fosters all students' engagement with and understanding of the complex issues of power, privilege, and prejudice. SJE promotes students' exploration of modes advocacy and activism in order to change the structures that exclude and oppress groups and individuals. SJE creates opportunities, like the Social Justice Institute, primarily for undergraduates to make connections between their leadership development and issues, including but not limited to race, gender, sexuality, and economic status.
The mission and vision of SJE involves teaching all students, including but not limited to members of historically underrepresented communities, the histories and legacies of social and institutional change. SJE accomplishes its goals through its co-curricular projects, workshops, and other collaborative programs with academic departments, administrative units, and student organizations.

Announcements

Welcome back to school!

Our office has moved! We are now located at 247 Tillet Hall on the Livingston Campus in Piscataway.

Please note, our deadlines for grant applications have changed for the academic year.  The first deadline for applications is October 15.  Please use the new forms for 2009-2010. To fill out a grant application, click here.

Jenny Kurtz joined us in fall 2008 as our new Coordinator of LGBT Programs.  She previously worked at Smith College’s Resource Center for Sexuality and Gender. She thoroughly enjoys working with the Rutgers community and looks forward to a new year of programs for 2009-2010.  You can learn more about her here.  This academic year she will be Acting Director of the Office of Social Justice Education and LGBT Communities.

Jenny is standing in for Cheryl Clarke, who will be Acting Dean of Students on Livingston Campus for the academic year.  Dr. Clarke will still be overseeing the Committee to Advance Our Common Purposes. You can read more about her here.

Alexandria Dick joined the Office of Social Justice Education and LGBT Communities in fall 2008 and will continue to assist with diversity programming and grants.  Alexandria earned her Master's in Women's and Gender Studies from Rutgers University in summer 2009 and is now full-time in the School of Social Work PhD program and working at the Center on Violence Against Women and Children.

We welcome two new graduate interns to our office: Sattik Deb and Nicholas Cano. Sattik received his Bachelor's in Political Science from Rutgers University and is currently attending the Graduate School of Education at Rutgers in College Student Affairs.  Nicholas is a Master’s student in the Graduate School of Education School Counseling program at Rutgers.  He received his Bachelor’s in Psychology from Hofstra University in 2009.

We also have Omar Reategui joining our office as our undergraduate workstudy student for the 2009-2010 academic year.  Omar is a second-year student in the Psychology department at Rutgers University.
