What is ADHD?

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a treatable disorder that affects approximately 3 to 5 percent of the population.

Common symptoms of ADHD may be exhibited at home or at school and may include:

• difficulty remaining seated

• difficulty following through on instructions

• difficulty organizing tasks

• losing things necessary for tasks and activities

• difficulty with tasks that require sustained concentration

• easily distracted

• appearing not to be listening to what is said

These behaviors are signs of a problem when children display them significantly more than do their peers. Accurate assessment is most important in order to know if the nature of the problem is emotional, a learning disability or ADHD, all of which can result in these behaviors.

How can I help my child?

The Psychological Clinic of the Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology of Rutgers University is offering assessment plus a 5-part workshop for parents of elementary school aged children with ADHD.

Parents who participate in this series will learn:

1. About ADHD: Up-to-date information on the nature, developmental course, and known causes of ADHD.

2. At home: Concrete, effective strategies for understanding and managing problem behaviors.

3. At school: Legal and educational rights and services for a child with ADHD and strategies for obtaining them.

4. Other treatment options: Information about medications and alternative therapies.

5. For you: Techniques to manage. your own stress and a chance to meet other parents to share information and experiences.

The Program:

This 5-week series is held in small groups of 8-10 parents, which meet for two hours each week. Groups start periodically during the year, and are taught by advanced doctoral psychology candidates who specialize in LD/ADHD.

Eligibility:

Eligibility for the program is determined through interviews with parent(s), and child, and rating scales given to the parent(s) and to the child's teacher. A thorough assessment is essential to rule out the presence of other difficulties which might resemble ADHD.

Fees:

The cost for the program of five 2-hour sessions is $300. If your child has already been evaluated, then the program cost is $200. Supervised child care is provided, and refreshments will be served. The program is held in the Psychology building on Busch Campus of Rutgers University in Piscataway, New Jersey.

Occasionally, what appears to be ADHD actually turns out to be a learning disability, emotional problem, or some type of developmental disorder. Additional information and assessment services are available through the Psychological Clinic to deal with these concerns.
