"Douglass College is the place where women learn to lead, and where they learn to lead internationally."
Douglass College is about the character of women's leadership, as much as it is about its importance and expansion. It is clear that within this new global environment, leadership will be needed from all segments of the human family. Douglass College has been about women’s leadership from its inception. Even as women in America could not vote in 1918, Douglass College embarked on its mission to develop the minds and character of young women who one day would. This mission has spanned an era of Wilsons, Roosevelts and Bushes. But it has also spanned one filled with Eleanors, Madeleines, and Condoleezas.

There is no question that the status of women has grown, even as we have grown. But, may we ever be reminded that our mission is as much about who we are, as it is about what we teach. The world has been painfully reminded that where women are limited, development is limited. Where women cannot lead, nations cannot advance.

Douglass College is in many respects training, teaching and shaping the lives of women for the sake of democracy and human progress here at home and around the world. What we offer is a special kind of training and a special kind of education.

We accomplish this by offering the best of both worlds, a premiere coeducational academic environment in combination with a residential women’s community. Through our mission courses and our co-curricular programming young women are encouraged to take on leadership roles, pursue fields that have been non-traditional, and to seek out opportunities that will enhance their development.

Providing the skills that young women need to thrive in whatever arena they choose is the foundation of our work here at Douglass. For me this is a truly exciting time to be involved in women's education. I am humbly inspired and dedicated to this mission and I urge you to explore our website to find out for yourself what the "Douglass Difference" can mean for you.

Sincerely,
Carmen Twillie Ambar
