The Douglass Science Institute Program Series (DSI) offers pre-college women, who are interested in math, science, and engineering, the opportunity to explore scientific research in a collegiate setting and learn the skills needed to be a successful female scientist. The Douglass Science Institute provides the support to young females to achieve their goals, while fostering their own personal growth and development.
Douglass Project pre-college programs encourage high school women to pursue majors in math, science, and engineering by involving them in hands-on math and science-related activities, helping them establish peer networks, and exposing them to female role models.

Science Weekend Academy

Career Exploration Day
Douglass Science Institute Program Series (DSI)
DSI is a four-year summer residential program for young women entering 9th grade who want to explore a variety of areas including biology, chemistry, computers, environmental and marine sciences, engineering, physics, and mathematics. During exciting hands-on labs, workshops, and field trips, students explore new horizons in these technical areas and find how how to build a future around them. Participants also learn about career options in math, science, and engineering by talking with undergraduates, Rutgers University faculty, and women working in the corporate world. The program aims to create an exciting an supportive environment to nurture students intellectually, creatively, and socially. Participating students are encouraged to share their ideas and work cooperatively with new friends both in the classroom and through informal group activities.
Who Can Participate?
To be eligible to apply for DSI, students must be attending a high school in Northern or Central New Jersey in the following September. Admission to the program is based on several factors, such as involvement in math and science activities, letters of recommendation, and the student's level of enthusiasm for learning.
How to Apply:
Applications for DSI are filed during the spring term of the 8th grade year. Application materials are made available in February and can be obtained from middle/junior high guidance departments or directly from the Douglass Project by calling (732) 932-9197, ext.10.
Douglass Science Weekend Academy
The Douglass Science Weekend Academy offers students opportunities to explore the life sciences, physical sciences, mathematics and technology through labs and workshops. The Weekend Academy runs three consecutive Saturdays, usually in the fall semester, although they will be held in the Spring Semester of 2001. Hands on activities highlighting areas such as biology, ceramic engineering, chemistry, math, physics and technology are led by high school teachers and Rutgers University faculty and students. The Academy is offered to 9th and 10th grade women attending schools in Northern and Central New Jersey.
How to Apply:
Admission is based on an essay expressing your interest in the sciences, engineering, or math; letters of recommendation; and your level of involvement in extracurricular activities. Admission to the program is competitive.
Application packets are available in early September from high school guidance departments, or directly from the Office of the Douglass Project, (732) 932-9197, ext. 10.
Douglass Science Career Exploration Day
Douglass Science Career Exploration Day is designed for 11th and 12th grade students who are interested in exploring careers related mathematics, the sciences, and engineering. The program features outstanding guests from the scientific research community who speak on relevant topics. Past speakers have included representatives from Lucent Technologies, Colgate-Palmolive Company, Sun Microsystems, Schering-Plough Research Institute, Mobil-Exxon Corporation, Ethicon, Inc., and many others. Students participating in the program will meet and talk with women role models who have excelled in the fields of math, science, and engineering, and learn about their educational experiences, career-related activities, and research projects. Fields represented include biochemistry, pharmacology, chemistry, environsmental sciences, molecular biology, physics, mathematics, plus all disciplines of engineering. Informative workshops that help shed light on the college admissions process, financial aid availability, and issues of educational equity are also offered to parents.
How to Register:
Students interested in the program may register to attend four 30-minute career sessions. Registration forms are available in early September from high school guidance departments or directly from the Office of the Douglass Project, (732) 932-9197, ext. 10.
