INTRODUCTION TO SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH
Course Overview:
The course is designed to prepare undergraduate women for laboratory research in various STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) fields. Topics discussed will include:
- scientific methodology
- gender issues
- career opportunities
- ethical issues
Faculty members from different STEM departments present guest lectures on their research, as well as topics and issues related to their particular academic disciplines. Students will be assigned to a faculty mentor in whose lab they will work on a weekly basis. Under the supervision of this faculty member, they will develop a short-term research project. The research is presented to an audience at the end of the semester, as well as submitted as a research paper written in scientific-journal style.
