Nepenthes burkei   Veitch ex. Masters

Nepenthes ventricosa has often been confused with this species.  Known only from the island of Mindoro, Philippines (but may also occur on Panay island).  N. burkei, N. insignis, N. sibuyanensis and N. ventricosa appear to be closely related species.  All four share several traits, but each one still has its defining characteristics.

My plants shown here are still babies eight to 12 centimeters wide, but even at this small size they can be told apart from N. ventricosa by carefully reviewing the pitchers.  With N. burkei we see well developed wings on the lower pitchers, differences in the pitcher shape with lower zone being ovoid in N. burkei, the middle area having a slight constriction and the upper part of the pitcher being tubular to slightly infundibular; compared against the pitchers of N. ventricosa which has a ventricose (swollen, or stomach shaped) lower area, constricted to very constricted middle area and the upper section of pitchers is infundibular with the pitcher opening being as wide as the widest cross section of lower, ventricose zone.

My seven clones are from Mount Halcon, Mindoro.
