JOSEPH V. DORIA, JR.

Joseph V. Doria, Jr. is currently serving as commissioner of the Department of Community Affairs. Doria served as mayor of the City of Bayonne from 1998 through 2007. During his tenure as mayor, Doria stabilized taxes, improved the delivery of municipal services and has overseen unprecedented growth and prosperity for the municipality while reducing crime. Joe served as a New Jersey state senator for the 31st Legislative District from 2004 to 2007. During his tenure, he served as vice chair of the Senate Education Committee, the Senate Labor Committee and the Senate Economic Growth Committee. He was also a member of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee and chaired the Commission on Business Efficiency in the Public Schools.

Joe Doria served for nearly a quarter century in the New Jersey General Assembly, first elected in 1979. Doria was elected Speaker of the General Assembly by his colleagues for the 1990-1991 legislative session and served as minority leader from 1992 to 2002. When Joe Doria left the Legislature in 2004, he was the longest serving member of the New Jersey General Assembly and was the longest serving Democratic leader of the Assembly in recent history.

Joe attended Marist High School in Bayonne. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Saint Peter’s College with majors in History, English and French. He holds a Master’s Degree in American Studies from Boston College. Doria attended New York University and Fordham Law School and received his doctorate in Organizational Leadership and Education Administration from Teachers College, Columbia University in May of 2000.

Since 2003, Doria has been an adjunct faculty member at Rutgers University’s Eagleton Institute of Politics. In addition to his working in the classroom at Saint Peter’s, Joe Doria also was an administrator at the College. Doria has received over 200 awards and citations from both public and private groups. Doria and his wife, the former Maribeth Keselica, were married in 1978. They have one daughter, Margaret Mary.
