Undergraduate Major Programs

Chinese (165)

Students majoring in Chinese take 24 credits in courses taught in Chinese beyond the intermediate level, including courses in both modern and literary Chinese.

Chinese Concentration in East Asian Languages and Area Studies (214)

The interdisciplinary major in East Asian Languages and Area Studies with a concentration in Chinese requires a minimum of 12 credits in Chinese language, beyond the intermediate level, and 18 credits of appropriate courses related to Asia from more than two different disciplines. Half of the 18 credits should be in 300 and 400 level courses. 

Japanese Concentration in East Asian Languages and Area Studies (214)

The interdisciplinary major in East Asian Languages and Area Studies with a concentration in Japanese requires a minimum of 12 credits in Japanese language, beyond the intermediate level, and 18 credits of appropriate courses related to Asia from more than two different disciplines. Korean Concentration East Asian Languages and Area Studies (214)

The interdisciplinary major in East Asian Languages and Area Studies with a concentration in Korean requires a minimum of 12 credits in Korean, beyond the intermediate level, and 18 credits of appropriate courses related to Asia from more than two different disciplines. Half of the 18 credits should be in 300 and 400 level courses.  

Undergraduate Minor Programs

Chinese (165)

The minor in Chinese consists of six courses of 3 or more credits beyond the elementary level, in both modern and literary Chinese. Of the six courses,at least three must be at the 300 level, or above, and must be chosen from those acceptable for the major.

Japanese (565)

The Japanese minor requires six courses in Japanese beyond the elementary level. Of the six, at least three courses must be at the 300 level or above. Courses taught in English are generally not counted toward the minor requirements.

Korean (574)

The minor in Korean requires six language courses beyond the elementary level, of which at least three courses must be at the 300 level or above. 
 

Asian Studies (098)

The interdisciplinary minor in Asian Studies consists of nine courses
distributed as follows:

(1) four courses in one Asian language, normally two years of Chinese, Japanese, or Korean;

(2) three courses specifically in Asian Studies;

(3) two courses on Asia selected from two different discipline areas;

(4) a substantial paper written for an Asian Studies seminar or an approved equivalent.
