The fellowship is a joint venture between Daiichi Sankyo and Rutgers University. Tailored to his/her individual interests, each fellow will have a unique opportunity to develop a comprehensive understanding of their respective departments within a rapidly growing pharmaceutical company. Medical Affairs

New Product Planning Market Research The New Product Planning Market Research Fellow will design and implement qualitative/quantitative primary market research in various therapeutic areas including cardiovascular, diabetes, infectious disease and oncology. The fellow will help validate forecast assumptions and identify key market drivers to ensure that each pipeline product achieves its optimal commercial value. The fellow will analyze and retrieve current data through secondary resources for market input into commercial value analysis. The fellow will establish a competitive intelligence monitoring system for Daiichi Sankyo pipeline products to understand the current and future competitive market landscape. Other areas within New Product Planning that the fellow will be exposed to include: early stage products, clinical development, market development and in-license opportunities. Ortho-McNeil-Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc. emphasizes a team-oriented structure in which the fellow works closely with business analytics partners and various internal departments such as Marketing, Finance, Business Development, Sales Training, and Medical Affairs. The fellow also collaborates with various outside consultants and agencies. In addition, the fellow gains exposure to a wide variety of marketing areas such as strategy development, segmentation, positioning, and message development. Strong written and oral communication skills are important, along with the ability to interact effectively with individuals in diverse areas of expertise. No prior marketing research experience is required, although candidates should express interest in developing strategic thinking, business analytics, and customer focus. Up to 25% of the fellow’s time may be spent traveling within the U.S.
Business Intelligence Fellowship The Business Intelligence Fellowship is a two-year position that focuses on supporting and augmenting business decision-making, and strengthening the company’s competitive advantage through the timely capture and analysis of critical information. The Rutgers Pharmaceutical Industry Fellowship Program, in partnership with the Johnson & Johnson Group of Consumer Companies, is a two-year program that provides exposure and training in the various sectors of the company, enabling the fellows to gain an in-depth understanding of the pharmaceutical strategic and operational activities. The Fellowship supports one year in the area of Clinical Research/Medical Affairs or Regulatory Affairs, while the second year supports opportunities for rotations in the various business sectors including consumer healthcare, pharmaceuticals, or medical devices & diagnostics.
Regulatory Affairs Regulatory Affairs proactively drives the business forward and fosters continued innovation by working to develop new products and claims, support current marketed products, and maintain compliance with applicable regulations.
Strong working relationships are also built with internal colleagues, FDA, other Regulatory Authorities, and external stakeholders.
Regulatory Affairs preceptors are considered subject matter experts within their therapeutic areas. The fellow can expect their preceptor to provide assignments that are challenging and provide opportunities to broaden their professional experience, while allowing them to enhance their academic and leadership potential. The primary focus of this Fellowship is Market Development-Commercialization of the life cycle management plan as well as the process of creating brand awareness and integrated communications strategies, which may encompass the functions of advertising and promotion, public and professional relations, continuing medical education, and patient education.
The Strategic Marketing Fellow will be provided with marketing excellence training to further develop the following competencies of a successful product manager according to the sanofi-aventis marketing model. These competencies include Strategic Planning, Operational Excellence, Analytical Thinking, Customer and Industry Insights, Leading & Teamwork, Communications, and Creativity/Innovation.
During this two-year Strategic Marketing Fellowship, the Fellow will:
- Assist in the development of Strategic and Tactical Plans
- Gain experience in execution of marketing strategies, programs and tactics to attain strategic objectives
- Contribute to brand success by working effectively with multiple agency partners as well as cross-functional colleagues such as: Market Research, Medical Affairs, Public Relations, Managed Markets, Sales Management
- Develop relationships with key thought leaders and association leaders
- Manage scientific content development for a variety of professional education programs
- Oversee programs aimed at creating product awareness at major national medical congresses and symposia
- Utilize competitive analysis to develop or adjust key product strategies that will create competitive advantage
- Manage within budget ensuring a cost effective allocation of resources

Purpose of the Program
This distinctive two-year program provides practice opportunities within Schering-Plough that will enable individuals with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree to gain in-depth exposure in a variety of areas within the organization. Additionally, fellows will have the opportunity to enhance their academic and traditional clinical pharmacy experience in conjunction with Rutgers University. Overall, the program is a challenging post-doctoral experience that will provide the individual with the training and the knowledge to pursue a career within the pharmaceutical industry.
Objectives of the Program:
- To provide fellows with in-depth experience in the fields of Clinical Research, Clinical Pharmacology, Regulatory Affairs and Global Medical Affairs/Global Medical Information
- To provide individuals with the opportunity to expand their knowledge of pharmacy by participation in academic, clinical and industry initiatives.
- To provide exposure to potential employment opportunities within the pharmaceutical industry.
The Schering-Plough Component
The two-year post doctoral fellowship is designed to provide a general understanding of the drug development process while allowing an in-depth understanding of specific departments within Schering-Plough, including the Schering-Plough Research Institute (SPRI). While concentrating in one particular area of the company, individuals have numerous opportunities to interface with many different departments within the organization.

The two-year Market Research / Competitive Intelligence fellowship at Tibotec Therapeutics, a division of Ortho Biotech Products, L.P., a Johnson & Johnson Company, offers an extraordinary opportunity to be involved in all the stages of pharmaceutical product marketing, with virology being the core areas of focus. As a member of the Market Research/ Competitive Ingelligence Department, the fellow will interact with leaders of various departments (e.g., Professional Marketing, Direct-To-Consumer Marketing, and New Product and Business Development), market research vendors, and colleagues across all J & J companies in the Market Research Departments. The market research studies the fellow will be involved with will utilize numerous methodologies (e.g., internet surveys, telephone interviews, focus groups, chart reviews), and study results will help guide the clinical and promotional development of products throughout their life cycle. In addition, the fellow will work closely with our competitive intelligence team in gathering competitive insights to make business decisions. Tibotec Therapeutics recently launched its second antiretroviral medication and will be launching several products in the next few years giving the fellow the opportunity to gain valuable launch experience within the virology arenas.

TKL Research, Inc., founded in 1944, is one of the oldest clinical research firms in the United States. TKL Research, Inc. is a contract research organization (CRO), which conducts studies at our clinical centers and also manages multi-center trials through our Clinical Trial Division. TKL Research, Inc. and Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy at Rutgers University are jointly offering a 2 year post-doctoral fellowship in clinical trials research. The fellow can expect to be involved in the following areas of clinical research: coordination of clinical trials, regulatory affairs, protocol development, identification and selection of clinical sites, clinical trial management, data management, monitoring and medical writing. At the completion of the TKL Research, Inc. component, the fellow may have an opportunity to participate in an offsite 3-month rotation at a pharmaceutical company.
