Early
Literacy Development
About the Early Literacy Component of the Program
The purpose of the
Eisenhower Project in Early Literacy is to implement cutting edge strategies in the field
of early literacy and work on the organization and management of the language arts block
to meet the individual needs of children. We begin work with creating a rich literacy
environment with the designs of literacy centers in classrooms. Specific strategies worked
on include creation guided reading groups based on student needs for skill development,
thematic instruction integrated into literacy development, the creation of centers for
independent work, and the use of technology in early literacy development. Emphasis is
placed upon meeting district core curriculum goals in literacy development, meeting NJ
Language Arts Standards, and developing leader teachers to help mentor other teachers
interested in participating.
The current Eisenhower initiative supports the participation of 15
teachers in grades Pre-K to 3, in and Interactive ( ITV) course on early literacy. The
course is transmitted from Rutgers and teachers at the different sites can interact with
the instructor and other sites as well. Rutgers students in our teacher education program
are placed in participating teacher's classrooms to help them implement new strategies,
and all classrooms are visited three times to year to help set the goals accomplished.
In addition to the formal class meetings, after school discussion sessions are held
monthly to clarify issues and concerns.
