Commercializing Biocontrol: Current Grower Perspective
Steven Rogers, Ecostat, Inc. Highland City, FL, USA 33846
Currently, there are three general approaches to biological control that may be adopted by farmers: 1) biocontrol products; 2) classical biocontrol, and 3) natural suppression. The first approach is a commercial one and is supported largely by the biocontrol industry. The second approach is managed by the public sector and is most funded by government organizations and institutions. However, there is little or no commercial support for (and little incentive to develop) the natural suppression approach to managing damaging pest populations. Although there are many outstanding successes in biocontrol, there remain numerous obstacles to implementing biological strategies and tactics of all three types. These obstacles fall into one of seven general categories, including the political, scientific, psychological, economic, and social barriers. This presentation uses examples to illustrate these obstacles and presents several case studies where these obstacles have been overcome.
