The Department of Women's and Gender Studies
Since its first course offerings in 1969, the Department of Women's andGender Studies, School of Arts and Sciences, has become one of the strongestprograms in the United States, enrolling 2000 students in undergraduatecourses annually. The department currently has 200 undergraduates in majorand minor degree programs, 35 students in the M.A. program, 40 students inthe Ph.D. program, and 80 doctoral students from departments across theuniversity in the graduate certificate program. Women's and Gender Studiesalso offers minor degrees in Critical Sexualities Studies and SocialJustice.
The Department faculty includes 32 core members and 70 affiliated facultywhose expertise in women's and gender studies is enriched by specializationsin arts, anthropology, critical race theory, comparative literature, ethnicstudies, feminist theory, geography, history, law, literatures in English,French and Spanish, philosophy, political science, postcolonial studies,religious studies, and sociology. Committed to research and teaching thatexplores the complex intersections of gender, race, class, ethnicity,sexuality and national identity, faculty offer courses that focus on thestudy of women, gender and sexuality in Africa, Eastern and Central Europe,East Asia, South Asia, the Caribbean, Latin America, as well as the UnitedStates and the European Union.
