Writing
Bellin, Roger. Retrospection and Prophecy in the Structure of "Mad Love". Journal of Modern Literature v. 30 no. 2 (Winter 2007). Andre Breton's Mad Love deserves more attention both as a literary narrative and as a set of theoretical propositions about art and politics. This article studies its narrative time-structure and examines its arguments, and asks what each of these aspects of the text can tell us about the other.
Film
Rosenbaum, Jonathan. Viridiana. Cineaste v. 31 no. 4 (Fall 2006). This masterpiece tells the story of a Spanish novice who, following the suicide of an uncle who had attempted to rape her, renounces her final vows and lives in her uncle's estate surrounded by beggars she takes in as an act of charity. It is important to note that this film was made in the director's native Spain after almost three decades of exile in the United States and Mexico--therefore representing the reestablishment of his roots--but this particular context is not stressed on the otherwise excellent DVD release.
Music
Pape, Gerard. Varese the Visionary.Contemporary Music Review v. 23 no. 2 (June 2004). In this paper, Edgard Varese's visions of a new music through new musical instruments via a partnership of science and art are discussed. Along the way, attempts are made to explore Varese's idea of composition with sound: as an act of 'artistic and scientific research'.
